What's in the news

This project will help you develop your ability to write about the things around you.

Step 1 Summarize a news story

 

To summarize a story or an event is to explain only the most important details of what happened.

 

Your assignment is to:

 

1. Choose a news story that is less than one week old from the resouces on the left.

 

2. Read the story.

 

3. Record the main idea and important details (including the wh questions) in your notes.  You can use this document to help you if you would like.

 

4. Use your notes to write a paragraph summarizing what occurred.

 

5. Include a quote from the text

 

6. Include a picture and print out your paragraph.

Step 2
What is the news at Harbour?

 

Now it is your time to be a reporter.  You will report on an activity, event, or news that is occuring at The Harbour School.   (You are not to write about gossip or a negative topic.)

 

1. Find a news topic, activity, or event that is occuring at school.

 

2. Ask Mr. Fracchia to approve  the topic.

 

3. Find a resource to tell you about this news.

 

 

4. Interview someone about the topic

 

 

5. Use this worksheet to take notes on the topic

 

 

6. Write a paragraph about this topic including:

- the main idea

- the wh questions

- a quote from the person you interviewed

-a picture
