Writing to Persuade

Here you will practice writing a paragraph that will persuade others to do something.  This means that your main idea is what you want others to believe or think and your supporting ideas are your reasons why people should believe or think what you said.

Step 1 Read and understand the editorial

 

 

1. Read the article to the left.

 

 

2.  What is the main idea of the article?  (What is the author persuading the reader?)

 

 

3. What are the supporting details (What are the reasons that the author gives that the reader should agree with their main idea)

 

4. Do you agree with the author?  Why or why not?

Step 2 Write to persuade Mr. Fracchia

 

Mr. Fracchia is interested in buying new snacks.  So it is up to you to convince him which snack he should buy.  His two requirements for snack are that they are not too expensive and that they are kosher.

 

1. Choose a snack.

 

2. Write a paragraph explaining to Mr. Fracchia which snack he should buy for the room.  Your main idea should be which snack he should buy and your supporting details are the reasons why he should buy that snack.  (Remember you are trying to convince him so use reasons that will appeal to him!!!!!)

Step 3 Write to persuade your parents

This is your time to write to your parents to dicuss something that you would like to do or let you have.

 

1. Choose something that you would like from your parents or you would like them to let you do

 

2. Write a paragraph explaining to your parents explaining why they should listen to you  Your main idea should be what you want and your supporting details are the reasons why they should listen to you.  (Remember you are trying to convince them so use reasons that will appeal to them!!!!!)

Step 4 Write to persuade a staff member

 

Now is your turn to impact the school.  Choose a rule or policy that you do not like either in the school or a classroom.  Your job will be to write to the staff member in charge and tell them what you would like to change

 

1. Choose a rule or policy.

 

2. Write a paragraph explaining to the staff member which rule or policy you would like to change.  Your main idea should be what you would like to change and your supporting details are the reasons why it should be changed.  (Remember you are trying to convince someone so use reasons that will appeal to that person!!!!!)

Step 5 Write to persuade Ms. Kinslow

 

Ms. Kinslow is in charge of our character development plan for February.  It is your job to persuade her of where we should go or what we should do for our fun activity.  

 

1. Choose a place or actvitity that you would like to do.  To find places you might want to Google Maryland fied trip.

 

2. Write an email explaining to Ms. Kinslow which activity would be test.  Your main idea should be what you would like to do and your supporting details are the reasons why we should do that activity.  Make sure you have at least 3 reasons.  (Remember you are trying to convince someone so use reasons that will appeal to that person!!!!!)

Step 6. Writing to Schools

 

For our museum project we are asking schools to take a Green Quiz.  We want them to take the quiz and change their behavior so that we make a difference in stopping climate change. We are going to give a prize to whomever changes their score the most.  Your job is to write a letter to the school convincing the students and teachers to take the quix..  

 

 

 

2. Write an letter explaining to the students and teacher why they should take our quiz.  Make sure to include an introductory paragraph  explaining who we are and what we are doing.   Make sure you have at least 3 reasons.  (Remember you are trying to convince someone so use reasons that will appeal to that person!!!!!)

Step 6 Write to a Maryland State Legislature

 

Now is your turn to impact the state of Maryland.  The Maryalnd legislature is meeting right now to discuss several bills that might become laws.  Your job will be to choose a bill, decide what you believe should happen, and write to your Maryland Legislator persuading them.

 

1. Choose a possible bill in the House or Senate from the new legislation on this page.

 

2. Read the bill.  

 

3. Create a Google Doc with the name of the bill.  On that Google Doc summarize what the bill is saying, explain what your viewpoint is on the bill, and why you hold that view.

 

4. Find out who your legislator is by clicking here

 

5. Write a letter to your Maryland Legislator explaining to them how you think they should vote on the bill.  Your main idea should be what they should on the bill and the supporting ideas are the reasons why they should vote the way that you would like.  Make sure to use a business letter format found here
