Project 3 Life in the Colonies

The Assignment

We are going to have a colonial fair.  At the fair, each eighth grader will have the opportunity to lead a craft or do a job from the colonial time period.  So we will spend the next few weeks researching a particular craft or job that we can do.

Step 1 The Background

1. Using your notes, on your website write down how many colonies there were, who started them and what were the differences between the southern and northern colonies.

 

2. Look at the following list.    Use this video (teachers have the code) or these notes  to look up any jobs that you do not know what they are.

 

3. On your website, create a new page titled Colonial Jobs.  Choose 5 jobs that you did not know about  before.  On your website , explain those 5 jobs and include a picture of each.

Step 2 Who am I ?

1. It is time for you to chose your job.  Click on this list of colonial crafts.  Choose one that you would like to research and build.  On your website write down which craft you chose, what that craft does, and why you chose that craft.

 

2. Use the following resources to look at the difference between city and agrarian life in the colonies.

3. On your website, write down what colony you would like to live in, whether you would prefer to live in a city or  an agrarian life, and why you chose this.

 

 

4. If you get a chance give yourself a colonial name.

Step 3 How do I  learn?

1. Now it is time to find  my resources

 

2. Find resources that teach you how to make your crafts.  Make sure that you understand what is written.

 

3. Write down those sources on your website.

Step 4 What are the steps?

1. Use your resource to find out how to make your craft

 

2. On your page write out the steps that are necessary to make to your craft.  Make sure your steps are clear and easy to read.

 

3. Copy these steps onto a piece of paper and print it.  You can either write out the steps or type them..

Step 5 Resources

1. Identify the resources that you will need.

 

2. Identify where you can purchase these materials.

 

3. Order your materials.

Step 6 Practice

1. Use your steps and resources that you have identified to practice making your craft.

 

2. Decide what works and what does not work with your steps.

Step 7 Revise

1. Revise your steps based upon your experience making your craft.

 

2. Make your steps as clear as possible.
